RISUMSA Excos Marks 100 Days in Office, Highlights Achievements and New Initiatives

The leadership of the Rivers State University Medical Students’ Association (RISUMSA), under the administration of President Sido Efeoghene L., has marked its first 100 days in office with a reflection on achievements, student-focused initiatives, and plans for continued progress within the association.

In a statement released to members of the College of Medical Sciences community, the administration described the journey so far as one driven by service, representation, and intentional impact. The student leadership noted that its administration was founded on a student-centered mandate aimed at advocating for the welfare and development of RISUMSAites both academically and socially.

According to the statement, the past few months have seen increased engagement with college leadership on student concerns, alongside efforts to strengthen internal structures within the association. The administration also highlighted the launch of initiatives such as “RiSUMSA on Air,” designed to address issues affecting students beyond the classroom, including conversations around mental health and student wellbeing.

Reflecting on the milestone, the administration acknowledged that progress has come through sacrifice, teamwork, and the active participation of students across different levels of the college.

“When we came in, we promised progress. Today, we’re pausing to acknowledge it — and recommit to more,” the statement read.

The council emphasized its commitment to making academics more practical by extending learning opportunities beyond lecture halls through outreaches, collaborations, trainings, and advocacy programmes. It noted that several activities held during the period were made possible through the efforts of volunteers and students who contributed their time and energy toward community impact.

Among the academic and administrative milestones highlighted were the formation of an Academic Committee, orientation programmes for 100-level students, tutorial support for 200-level students, mock examinations for Part I MB students, and partnerships with organizations including the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), LinkedIn Locals Port Harcourt, and other professional bodies.

The administration also reported the successful hosting of programmes such as “Beyond Degrees,” awareness outreaches on cervical cancer and hypertension, mentorship initiatives, prayer meetings, and collaborative health outreaches with organizations including WHO-RISUMSA and Elysian Hope Foundation.

On student development and representation, the administration cited participation in NiMSA and FAMSA activities, appointments into national student leadership structures, and the launch of mentorship and capacity-building programmes for medical students.

The council further highlighted sporting and wellness activities introduced during the period, including fitness programmes, football competitions, and preparations for NiMSA games.

In addition, several new initiatives were unveiled within the first 100 days, including the Eagle’s Nest Research Programme, RiSUMSA Debate Club, Buddy Network, and the launch of the association’s official website.

Despite celebrating the milestone, the administration maintained that the journey is far from over, stressing that the achievements recorded so far are only the foundation for bigger goals ahead.

“Celebrating this milestone isn’t a finish line for us. If anything, it raises the bar. The foundation is set, and we’re committed to building on it — more opportunities, stronger advocacy, better support systems,” the statement added.

The leadership also expressed gratitude to RISUMSAites for their support and trust, noting that the progress recorded so far was not solely the effort of the executive council, but a collective achievement made possible by students who continuously engaged, challenged, and collaborated with the administration.

As the administration moves into its next phase, students are expected to look forward to expanded programmes, stronger representation, and increased opportunities within the medical students’ community at Rivers State University.
